Guest Blog – Student Work Experience at Irvings

My name is Sofia and I have just completed the first year of my law degree at the University of Liverpool. For the past two weeks I have been participating in work experience at Irvings Law and I have learnt a great deal during my time here.

During my work experience I have interacted with the solicitors and trainee solicitors in the firm. They have taught and guided me through all the different elements and steps involved in the personal injury claim process. This includes classifying the claim depending on the severity of the claimant’s injuries and all steps that follow after that. I have also looked at the different types of personal injury claims that could be made, for example road traffic accidents and clinical/professional negligence claims. This has given me a good insight into the everyday dealings of solicitors and where my career could take me in the future.

During my work experience I also attended court and witnessed several different hearings. These included hearings where the judge determined the value of different cases. All were very interesting experiences as I was able to see the court etiquette and procedures and the way in which the solicitors and barristers interact with each other and a judge.  I have also had the chance to go to several conferences; these help to aid clients with their case and determine the best way to progress the case, and also advise on the possible outcomes that may occur. I most enjoyed this aspect as I was able to observe how the solicitors and counsel advised clients and how they responded to the questions and concerns their clients may have had.

I also attended the fee earners meetings at Irvings which includes both the solicitors and trainee solicitors. In this meeting everyone has the opportunity to ask important questions that relate to their case, which is very valuable as it allows someone to get multiple opinions from experienced solicitors on how best to proceed, as well as contributing to other people’s queries.

Overall these past two weeks has taught me a lot and I would like to thank everyone at Irvings Law who made my work experience incredibly insightful and interesting.
